GIS Skills Tutorials

This page provides GIS tutorials for project collaborators with the Cooperative Biological Engagement Program and other SEER Lab related GIS/Remote Sensing projects. These tutorials are developed by SEER Lab personnel to meet project needs and provide instructional materials aimed at improving and sustaining GIS skills for project personnel. This page will update frequently with techiques, tips, and troubleshooting.

GIS Skills

This first set of videos illustrates Q-GIS basics practiced on 17 March 2016 during a SEER Lab AJ SVS and AJ MOH personnel via GoToMeeting. Following that meeting, K. Ludwig and J.K. Blackburn developed a video series to illustrate all of the steps practiced.

Basic QGIS – PART 1. This file demonstrates loading .shp and .csv files.

Basic QGIS – PART 2. Augmenting the Attribute Table and Feature Colors/Styles

Basic QGIS – PART 3. Preparing the AJ TAP-11 Data

Basic QGIS – PART 4. Applying the Techniques: Mapping AJ-11 Data

Basic QGIS – Deleting a field in a Q-GIS data table (K. Ludwig, 22 March 2016)

Intermediate GIS Analysis Skills: Using Q-GIS and R STUDIO to Perform Spatial Analysis Tasks

This section provides users with video demonstrations for performing geospatial analyses with Q-GIS or R using R Studio.

Kernel Density Estimation with Q-GIS including Spatial Descriptive Statistics

This video illustrates the use of kernel density estimation using Q-GIS to map the concentration of spatial events. In this example, we use the Heatmap tool in Q-GIS, the Spatial Point Pattern Analysis toolbox, and Calc (the free spreadsheet editor in Libre Office) to perform basic spatial statistics on a point data set and map concentrations of biting flies in a study area. Kernel density is a useful and quick tool for visualizing the distribution of point data a continuous surface. We use it often in SEER Lab projects for examining the distribution of disease events.

Preparing data in Q-GIS for setting up generalized linear models in Q-GIS and R Studio

This video illustrates the use of Q-GIS and Excel to prepare geospatial data for mapping Q-GIS and preparing data for a GLM model in R Studio.

Advanced Skills: Making Spatial Predictions – Preparing Datasets in Q-GIS and R Studio

Installing GIS and Ecological Niche Modeling Software

This section provides several videos on how to install software, and modify settings, for ecological niche modeling.

Installing DesktopGARP 1.1.3

This video provides a step-by-step installation process for setting up DesktopGARP 1.1.3 to run ecological niche modeling experiments with the Rule-set writing and Rule mapping application. This instruction will also provide the steps for allowing GARP to write out ESRI grid files using ArcView 3.3.
